Do you really have to roll your own? Geoserver and other provide 
alternative image servers for your own maps. As a default, no server 
component required, why not create TMS map tile set? (Look at MapTiler). 
OL supports it directly.
If really must roll-yer-own, then the easiest way to do it is override 
the getURL method for a tiled map set. Let OL do all the calculation for 
you.
