[OpenLayers-Users] WMS and mergeNewParams

I am a bit confused about how to apply the mergeNewParams() function to force
a WMS layer to go get new tiles. Do I need to call the mergeNewParams each
time a user enables the layer, or is it sufficient to set it one time after
the creation of the layer?
I suspect I need to call it each time the user turns the layer on but I just
want to clarify that.
