[OpenLayers-Users] get a feature from an html ID

I need to get a feature by the html id 

( two examples )

mouseOver my circle gives me "openLayers.layer.vector_124_vmlRoot"
mouseOver my square gives me "openLayers.geomitry.Polygon_751"

Not sure why they are different but is there a way to look up the actually
feature by this id?
