I also do the same using Mapserver, so it should be possible with Geoserver. In my case, I use ColdFusion to put the user-entered data into a SQL db, and then update the layer, which destroys it and then reloads it from Mapserver.

Yes Robert I think I should give it a try. I am also trying to do the same
thing using geoserver, after storing the values in db , I have to manually
publish the layer in geoserver and add its code in JS, Is there a way to do
this programmatically??.... like running the geoserver and adding a layer by
calling a function etc
