Alessandro - you are da bomb! That is what I am looking for and boy is 
that a clean way to do it.

Now the final piece is how to use the same polygon to do both the WFS 
query (to get the list of features) and WMS SDLSelect to get highlight 
the features. Maybe time to dig a bit deeper into the code for SLDSelect.
