Yes Geo enabled CMS and collaborative mapping are on the rise.
there are a couple of other projects going in this direction too e.g:
http://plone.org/products/collective.geo
(the main focus is to bring geospatial capabilities into a CMS)
http://geonode.org/
(sharing of geospatial information, mashup maps)
http://cartodb.com/
(share geospatial information, mashup maps and data)
to name just a few
can you explain where your project fits in here and what it's main
focus will be?
I don't want to discourage you, quite on the contrary, but keep
in mind that you have to find a niche where your product excels
and delivers what the others cannot or want not provide

If you save the living environment, the biodiversity that we have left,
you will also automatically save the physical environment, too. But If
you only save the physical environment, you will ultimately lose both.
1) Don’t drive species to extinction
2) Don’t destroy a habitat that species rely on.
3) Don’t change the climate in ways that will result in the above.
