Hello there, 

Are you sure that your problem is related with maxScaleDenominator?

in definition of maxScaleDenominator in ol documents it says:

"maximum scale at which to draw the feature." which means limit of maximum
scale to draw features, after that scale your features will be hidden. At
least it was like that in wms sld standarts.
