Bingo!  This seems to do the trick.  Much thanks!

(I just wonder if everyone else that has been coding polylines and scales on
their Mercator OpenLayers maps know about these tips and tricks?  In all the
code that I have looked at over the past two days, I didn't see any hints of
this)
