I've done it with CQL filters on Geoserver. However, you have to move 
all that behind a proxy so someone doesnt just create their own query 
string. You have a balance of performance and security to worry about. 
I'd pass this query to the mailing list of whatever WMS server you use 
(its not an OL issue because OL cannot address the security issue in a 
way that cant be hacked). Geoserver have a new security model and I 
havent explored what it possible with it yet.
