If you want a WMS layer from geoserver to use the integrated geocache, 
then make sure you have
tiled:true in the WMS config. You can check this is working by looking 
at the WMS requests going to geoserver in firebug or the like, and 
ensuring they have TILED=TRUE in the URL.

I find the direct integration works pretty well.
