Not too sure about what you mean by "too much code", but there are 
options. What WMS server are you using? If it is geoserver, look up the 
section on Variable substitution in SLD and the Env function. This plus 
filters gives you a good way to play with styles. However, you can send 
the complete body of an SLD in a WMS request, but you would also need 
code to modify a base SLD based on what variable was selected. Not a 
biggy really.
