I'm assuming that you can take care of introducing yourself :)

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation is an international not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the development of open geospatial technologies and data.

The British Columbia chapter of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation strongly supports the motion currently before this committee.

Open source software can in many cases be the correct choice for least cost and highest value, but is often overlooked because it does not fit well into traditional procurement processes. Organisations as diverse as the United States Department of Defence and the Government of South Africa have passed similar motions to ensure that they have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits offered by open source software.

We encourage you to consider this motion seriously for the benefits and efficiencies that it will bring to your organisation, residents, and businesses.

(sorry didn't get to open data)

Hi Jason

As I am in transit and I cannot get a hold of Tyler to write a statement...can I ask you to start a draft.

E.g.

We, as members of OSGeoBC, have read the motion before council today concerning open data and open standards.

We feel that it is in alignment with provincial, national, and international momentum among the digital economies. By way of example, the ... Example 1 (maybe EU, Geoconnections, etc...)... have passed similar motions.

..blah blah blah...

OSGeo is an organization...more blah blah.

I'm happy with you reading a statement Tyler prepares, or one of your own, as president of OSGeo BC.

Unfortunately, my week has me too busy to really follow up well on
this topic. But I see in this article, they welcome comments and
also invite people to come and speak/support the motion TOMORROW.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2009/05/19/tech-open-
city-vancouver-standards-source-data-reimer.html

Also a brief note here in their agenda:
http://vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/cclerk/20090521/csbu20090521ag.htm

I won't be making it, (if only it was any other week and I had more
than a few days notice ;-) ) but maybe some of you locals would be
interested/able. If you want to work with my on a statement we can
do that too. I'm going to try to put something together, but I'm
afraid it's too late unless you can show up in person. I'm sure our
chapter would gladly support anyone who volunteers to speak on our
collective behalf at 9:30 in the morning ;-)

Something you might be interested in Gerry? Martin? Others?

Tyler
