<p><span lang=EN-CA>VICTORIA -- The world's largest topographical map of
British Columbia is headed for the trash heap unless the city of Victoria can
find a new home for it by Jan. 7.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>The map, installed in Victoria's historic Crystal Garden 18
months ago as part of the ill-fated BC Experience tourist attraction, has to be
moved to make way for a convention centre project in the 80-year-old heritage
building.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>"It has to move in order for us to start renovations
on the facility," city communications manager Katie Josephson said.
"The map can be landfilled, but that's not our first choice. Our hope is
there's somebody out there that may have an interest or be able to find space
for it."<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>Measuring 12 metres by 23 metres, the $90,000, high-density
polyurethane map formed the centrepiece of the BC Experience when the
$12-million private venture opened its doors in June, 2006.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p><span lang=EN-CA>Just over three months later, the attraction declared
bankruptcy, leaving the map and an assortment of other assets behind. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>The City of Victoria assumed ownership of the map when it
took over the BC Experience's lease in June. City staff have scoured the
province for the past six months looking for someone willing to give the map a
new home, Ms. Josephson said.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>"We've contacted anyone and everyone - public sector,
private sector, the Provincial Capital Commission, B.C. Ferries, hotels,
community centres - and no one's been interested," she said.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>"The piece is enormous and it's so topical to B.C.
that we're not likely to have any interest from Alberta or other places outside
the province."<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>The map's maker, California-based Solid Terrain Modelling,
was among dozens of unsecured creditors who walked away empty-handed when the
BC Experience closed last fall.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>Solid Terrain Modelling president Lawrence Faulkner was
shocked to hear his company's creation might end up in the landfill. "Holy
mackerel ... that's just so depressing," Mr. Faulkner said. "That map
is a masterpiece. It's the best piece of work our company has ever done. It's
so unique, it has so much power." <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>Consisting of 100 panels weighing 16 kilograms each, the
map occupies what used to be a swimming pool located just behind the Empress
Hotel.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>Designed by famed British architect Francis Rattenbury,
Crystal Garden served as a conservation centre for endangered species from 1980
until it was closed in 2004 to make way for the BC Experience.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>Renovations to convert the glass-roofed building into extra
exhibit space for the city's nearby convention-centre facilities are slated to
begin early in the new year.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang=EN-CA>Ms. Josephson said the giant map is available free of
charge to anyone willing to take it away.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
