Andrea,
I think /opt would be a good choice. GRASS had the same problem and I
just put it directly under the root as C:\OSGeo4W\grass-... but that is
rather messy. I'll also have the same issue with OpenEV when it is ready
to go.
So I'm +1 on putting such things under /opt with a directory name closely
reflective of the package name.
