Cameron,
I can try, it probably runs with command line options - never tried...
But the script will only work if you are running the gisvm inside VMware (player, workstation, server, etc)
So it is not platform independent!
This procedure actually has two steps:
1. Zero empty disk space (inside VM)
2. Compress the vmdk (outside of VM)
The most important and URGENT aspect of it, is that:
we can (Should) immediately replace the download image files for a single 1.3 GB file!!!
I have it on my computer.
Could you make the procedure or should I upload the file (it will take 4 hours at my current ADSL connection)

Ricardo,
That sounds like good advice.
I suggest that we create a distribution.sh script, which would include
the compressing as you suggest, and zipping up, adding version number etc.
