If geoserver (maybe deegree also?) runs with better perfomance with Java
6, why to remove it from the VM? IMHO I think it should be acceptable to
spend those megabytes if the user experience of the app is better.

Indeed, next versions of gvSIG (not current 1.9) will be updated to java 6.
