already done in places, see the install_grass.sh and
install_gpsdrive.sh scripts for example.

apparently $HOME is kept in memory and so symlinks to
/usr/local/share/ are the way to go.


if apps' .rc files have a last-visited-folder option to set,
it would be nice for install scripts to set that up so folks
don't have to hunt around.
