[Live-demo] OSGeo Live 5.5 on a bootable USB stick

Hi, I followed all the instructions, CRC checks and all that to install
Xubuntu on a USB and get this error, I think, reading it as it flashes on
the console:

root:_
(blinks every 2 s. or so and shows)
"Start menu has no INITIAL label"

I reinstalled once in case I messed up something, but get the same thing.
Install on bootable DVD works fine, so I don't think my system (Win7 Home
Basic on 9 mo.-old HP Pavilion g6).

Searching that error message didn't appear to turn up anything, and
pendrivelinux.com is quiet.

Ant ideas or resources?
