I wonder if you would mind adding what you know into our wiki here:

I expect you will need to extend this section to say:
How to burn a USB with RUFUS. (noting that persistence doesn't work)
That Universal USB Installer has worked with previous versions of
OSGeo-Live, but was not working with OSGeo-Live 5.5.
Alternative solution: Boot from a OSGeo-Live or Ubuntu/Xubutu DVD, and
then build a USB using the ubuntu method.
After Ubuntu 12.04 is released (which is what we are using for
osgeo-live 6.0), we should test again, and then update our main page:
