 Trying to do

 install.packages("spatstat", dependencied=TRUE)
 }}}
 leads to some errors.
 OTOH, we have the regular maptools package installed, and it contains a
 vignette: "combine_maptools", with a 4 page coverage of importing a
 shapefile and doing some simple dissolving of features, and attaching
 attribute data. Maybe that would be a reasonable replacement for the
 missing shapefile vignette.
