Comment:

 the quickstart does not say where to save the .sld files.. If you try save
 the .sld files in /usr/local/share/data/natural_earth2/ then uDig fails
 silently, which is a uDig problem, but if you simply save the .sld in your
 home directory, it all works fine.

 closing as "works for me"
