Jeremy,

These questions all pertain to how Ubuntu/Debian work, not specific to
OSGeo Live. If you want to be able to save data back to the users home
directory all you need to do is select to add a persistent section when
creating the USB stick (Assuming you use the Ubuntu based USB creator).
Anything else is going to be quite complicated to do consistently.
