As we don't lose functionality, I think we can drop it. Issuing a
warning would be another possibility (and may be good for a grace
period), but dropping it reduces the amount of code and is the way to
go.
Maybe you drop it in the docs now, and add a warning to the code in 1.0
and 0.9 to tell the people it will disappear in 1.1, and then actually
remove it in 1.1.
