 It is insofar as "empty" is the cause, but the actual code line will be
 totally different, so "buffer works with empty" will be closed of
 separately from "gml output works with empty" and even "kml output works
 with empty" will be distinct. Unfortunately the rich typing of empty means
 we have a bunch of new failure cases lurking around, kind of like with the
 curve types in 1.4.
