 I wish someone smarter than I could look at this one... in this day and
 age separate processes shouldn't be able to stomp on one another. I guess
 there's the pgsql shared memory segment... anyone testing this should
 ensure their pgsql is compiled with --enable-cassert to make sure that
 memory operations in pgsql are being double-checked.
