[postgis-devel] Why setsrid after union ?

I'm wondering why is it mandatory to set the srid after an operation like
st_union and the likes (I think). Basically, the geoms should have the same
srid to be united, so it shouldn't change the srid. So why is st_union
returning a srid-less geometry ? I couldn't find an answer.
