 Okay confirmed.  mingw on mingw doesn't crash on Paul's sample query

 mingw with vcc+ compiled PostgreSQL consistently crashes on Paul's sample
 query.

 I still haven't had a chance to troubleshoot the rgdal crash that seems to
 happen on both, so I guess that one might be a separate issue.
