I'd suggest you check with packagers for the different distributions
if this is going to cause some issues for them. If it's going to cause
a lot of extra downstream work there, it might be better to take the
pain upstream, since it's only once.

Assuming you're still going to support he old branches, though, I
don't see any problem at all in the general idea :)
