I still see it in svn 2.2 branch. So I think it was this patch you provided that fixed it

Given that I haven't seen any issues with it on 2.3, and seems absolutely necessary for *BSD, I'm going to go commit it on 2.2 as well.
Let me know if anyone has issue with that.
