It's packaged in Debian because it was required by new releases of
mapnik-vector-tile (which in turn was required for node-mapnik).

As maintainer of various packages in Mapnik family developed by Mapbox,
I strongly suggest to not rely on their projects for PostGIS or any
other OSGeo project. Their builds rely on mason which has to be patched
out in distribution packages, and their projects tend to die when they
aren't commercially viable. Release management is also subpar, as they
seem to use git HEAD themselves instead of proper releases.

Let's keep the Mapbox mess confined to the Mapnik family, that is
painful enough to maintain as it is.

Kind Regards,

Bas
