"checked" how?  Presumably the issue is that posix doesn't say they are
ok, but somehow they are.  Do you mean

  checked by reading the operating system sources ont he particular
  system you happen to be using

and for this to be a local decision to exceed the normal safety
guidelines?  Or do you mean something larger scale?
