That's great news! I'm Giuseppe, one of the mentors involved in this
project. Did you have a look to this
<https://trac.osgeo.org/postgis/wiki/GoogleSummerCode2021>? there's a short
description of the project, with the main requirements needed to start to
work on it: you mentioned you already used PostGIS, did you have any chance
to have a look at its source code <https://github.com/postgis/postgis>?

To start, I'd say try to fully understand the aim of the project: how to
build a GiST index on a geospatial dataset, which problem can be faced in
case of large datasets, etc.

Please, keep us updated with the result of your test.
