Yea - if I had to do this, I would have to dump the two GIS columns on affected
servers and recreate them later.  Which I've done before.

I have 4 affected databases (and about 30 upgraded without hitting this issue).
This isn't causing any problem for me, so I can wait for your fix.

However, I also mentioned the need to "DROP CASTS" in order to upgrade to the
latest postgis, and in that case I already dropped them as a quick fix to allow
the upgrade to proceed, and cannot help test that part.
