 In the installation documentation under the section '2.2 Requirements',
 GDAL is listed as a required package for building or using PostGIS. I was
 able to install PostGIS without GDAL. Another developer here is using
 PostGIS and running tests against it without installing GDAL. I don't know
 if this was a packaging issue or the document should list GDAL as an
 optional package. I read the description for GDAL as being required, but
 others read it as only being required for raster support. Need
 clarification.
