 for 2.1.0 r11217 . Seems to work fine on my mingw64 w64.  Waiting to see
 if Debbie complains and works okay on my mingw64-w32 and old msys chain
 before commit to 2.0 branch.  So if this works, no more hacking required
 for mingw64
