 Are you planning to get to this in the next 2 weeks.  Wanta release 2.1 in
 another 2 weeks or so.  I think your patch above might work. I can help
 out with that.  since 2.1 doesn't support 8.4, we don't have to worry
 about the bytea stuff so much though I guess some folks might have it set
 to escape so we'd want to force one way or the other.
