 Yes, there are lots of discussions about tolerance in PostGIS Wiki. It
 means, that users consider it important.

 "PostGIS Grand Unified Custom Variables" (GUCs) are just fine for me
 because all our data has same tolerance anyway. Some other users may
 disagree and want some more. Anyway the concept of tolerance will be huge
 step forward for PostGIS.

 And yes. Retaining topology by for example keeping some minimum amount of
 segments in linearization, is reasonable solution here in this ticket.
