 The difference might be that dpkg-buildpackage uses additional compiler
 flags compared to a "plain" build, cf. `dpkg-buildflags`. I'd especially
 suspect `LDFLAGS=-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions -Wl,-z,relro` to make a
 difference in this area.
