 I found a way to do this with older GEOS: compare the collection of a pair
 of edges with a noded version of them (using ST_Node). If the two geoms
 are equal, they were simple (no noding needed). This is implemented now in
 https://gitea.osgeo.org/postgis/postgis/pulls/804
