[postgis-users] Distance Problem

Hello GIS-Friends,

i have 2 tables of geometry data, the first contains some multiline 
strings of
streets and the second table a list of points of interests. I want to
use the data to
build a Graph in my Java-Application and in this case I need the nearest
streets
for all points of interest. The distance function delivers only the
shortest distance
between two geometry-objects, but I need the point within a
multlinestring, which
has the shortest distance to my point of interest.

Can I solve this problem with the postgis functions
