[postgis-users] postgis installation problem

hi ,
  when i tried to install postgis .7.4/.7.5/.7.3/.7.1 on top of postgres 7.3.4 i get these errors repeatedly. can anybody tell me what might be the problem and how can i overcome this.
 (the errors goes to 2 pages.. part of it is like this.....)
gcc -O2 -Wall -Wmissing-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -L/usr/local/lib
> -g  pg_passwd.o -lz -lreadline
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
>   make[3]: *** [libpostgis.a] Error 1
