[postgis-users] "geometry" type versus single type in spatial column

Dear list,
according to the postgis documentation you can either restrict the spatial
column to a single type or use the generic "geometry"-type to store
different geometry types in one feature table. Are there any disadvantages
regarding the latter option (mixed-type feature tables? For instance are
there any geometric functions that require single-type feature tables? Or
are there differences in terms of performance?
