If your elevation contours can be turned into a GMT grid file (DEM) then using
grdtrack with the XY coord sequence will give you the profile. Possibly ask on
teh GMT list for help on this.

Also, GRASS can be used to generate profiles, but that may be using a cannon to
swat flies :-)
