Well, there certainly could be some value to this, but I'm not sure
it would justify the complication and effort involved.  Also, oddly my
intent is to merge the GDAL and OGR sides of the existing library more
closely at some point in the future specifically so that I can share more
of the driver and "core object metadata" architecture between the two sides.

Note that there are options to build custom GDAL libraries with a reduced
set of stuff for folks that need something slim and trim.

This is likely enough of this non-PostGIS topic here on this list.
