hello friends,
after a while of coding, debugging, and persuation work with the debian gis team,
i am pleased to announce, and finally also point you to, the debian package files
for postgis.
to date, the postgis-1.0.0rc6 packages builds on debian woody, sarge and sid.
please be welcome to use, test, discuss and comment any issue regarding this
work. i will be very glad to know of the package builds on non-i386 debian architectures.
this package has been made by me, in colaboration with roberto boati, who
is my co-maintainer of this package as registered with debian gis project, and with
strk and markus shaber, which made every change to postgis source and makefiles,
so that the debian stuff could reside in the debian subdirectory alone.
upon installation, the debian package is creating a template database in postgresql,
named template_gis, and is automatically removing it upon uninstall. additional template
databases with postgis contents may be made, using mktemplate_gis(1). making such
templates with permissions for a certain user, will allow non-postgresql-superuser users
to create postgis enabled databases.
the only patches made by ther debian packaging to files not in the debian subdirectory, are
changing the script files for the regression testing to be usable by the current user, requiring
database creation privileges only.
files are available for download at: http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debian-gis/pool/p/postgis/.
users of older postgis, might find useful packages for postgis-0.9.1 by roberto boati, found there,
too.
you may also use the following source locations, for packages in sid:
deb http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debian-gis unstable main non-free contrib
deb-src http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debian-gis unstable main non-free contrib
looking forward for your input,
best regards,
alex
