[postgis-users] postgis indexing: ok for 3d?

I am interested in storing a collection of 3D points is postgis.  Is the
postgis R-tree index effective in 3D?  (I'm clearly not familiar with how
R-trees work).  All the examples I have seen are 2D.  So I  know that the
R-tree is great for finding all points within a rectangle.  But could I use
the index to ask for all points within a 3D box?
