Depending on GEOS version.
Since GEOS-2.1.1 intersection() somehow supports 3d.
Version 2.1.2 contains a fix in it.
Polygon 3d intersection is very fuzzy.

Currently nowhere.
Should be in the postgis manual though... if you can
file a bug report for this I'll eventually handle it.
