Mr. Sid is another proprietary GIS image format, like ECW, that has good compression properties.  However, all other things being equal, I'd rather use an open standard like JPEG 2000 than a proprietary format that is supported by only one organization.  

ERMapper does have a JPEG2000 codec, and it seems like they allow it to be used in open source projects.  However, I've had trouble downloading it (I get an error message).  There seems to be something wrong with their download page on the site, or else they have decided to stop giving it away for free.  

Since I haven't been able to look at the ERMapper JPEG200 codec, I do not know if it has the necessary low-level interfaces for extracting parts of images.  Does anyone have any experience with this codec?
