[postgis-users] Surface maps from point interpolation

I have a postGIS db with millions of point observations.  Is there a way in
postGIS to make surface maps from a subset of these points? In a perfect
world I would like to be able to have a web user select the subset--like
'species x for time period y' and make an interpolated surface map.  Can
this be done in postGIS?  And also can it be done fast enough to be 'on the
fly'?
