I'm sorry! This is a pre-release version exclusive under VMWare format
image.
I believe GISVM will be initially for MAC/Windows users where VMWare is, in
my opinion, the oldest and best "player" on the market. 
And btw, "VMWare Player" is Free and Open Source:

Nevertheless I believe that a "Standard Format" is the best solution and the
future release format for GISVM. As you probably know, VMWare and XEN are
working on the OVF format for a long time and probably will be the industry
standard in a near future:

I never tried it in KVM, but I have seen several posts about using
successfully vmdk in KVM.
